So I am getting a new computer and it's going to be my art computer however I will no longer be able to use my Photoshop Elements 7. So I was wondering what program I should get :/

And I wanted to hear from you guys so I could get some suggestions. The requirements are it has to be an art program and it has to cost under $300.

Please I could use some help.

I see, well thank you everyone. I am not exactly into photo manipulations, however I am going to research every program I can. And get the free trial with Sai, I think that'll be a start for testing it out.

:)

Agreeing with everything Evlon said about each program. GIMP is awesome for cropping/resizing.

I use a myriad of art programs.

Sai
Gimp
Corel
Inkscape
OpenCanvas
Sculptris
Paint.Net

Of all the art programs I've used photoshop is the most anti intuitive. Seriously, I take 5 hours to do simple little things that I know if I could whip it on one of my other programs would be done in a snap :/

I might be biased, but I do use photoshop when I have to for my classes, but its hate, hate, hate frustration and more hate.

How I normally use my programs is in tandem. Each has strengths and weaknesses. Gimp is great for manipulating an existing image, such as resizing, colour tweaks and the like. Sai I love for illustrations. Corel for photography mainly, but also image tweaks that often give way different results than Gimp.

I mean, you have to look at this question thusly, "What do I want to do with this program?"

Trying to find a "good" art program for cheap/free is very broad and ranges from 3D modeling to animation to MS Paint. Each to his own really, what another artist says is the best, might not be the best for you. Get out there, find art programs that do what you want to do and try them, and see if they suite your fancy.

GIMPs line tool is fun, but I still wayyy prefer SAI over GIMP.

I understand what you are saying Gracie, I might use PS7 for special effects. But as for GIMP I did like it at the time of use, but I was such a newbie at digital art at the time. I didn't know that the brush tool made smooth lines x.x And what shading was XD

So yes maybe it would be a good thing to try again but I was never really satisfied with GIMP :/ Honestly I like PS7 more.

I just know I can't really afford a better Photoshop or Painter XD

I have to say, Photoshop Elements is the only art program I've ever hated.

I agree that Paint Tool SAI is a good buy. For me, it had a small learning curve and an easy interface. It's known for its line quality, as Gamzee said. However, it doesn't have as many features as a gigantic program like Photoshop.

GIMP is a free program that I used for many years. It seems to me that people either love or hate it. I loved it. It was good for everything except very small, detailed work.

Edit - Didn't see your post about using Gimp before. :P

PS7 is just a bit better than GIMP to me, which I have used GIMP before. But when I get my computer I will definetly try the free trial and decide. So far Photoshop is ranging from $100-$600 *O*

It's very easy to use and is a lot cheaper :) A lot of artists use it for the line quality, but I do 100% of my art in SAI.
I don't know if it's better than PS7 because I don't have that.
